Javanese dance & kendang

Two teachers from Java are giving eight evenings of classes in Hoogvliet this September. The graceful movements of the Gambyong Pareanom early in the evening, then the sound that steers the whole gamelan orchestra.

Two courses

Learn to dance, or to steer the orchestra.

Both courses run on the same eight days and consist of a foundation block and an advanced block. The class times follow on from each other, so you can take both.

Taught by masters from Java.

Both teachers are in the Netherlands especially for this course and teach the classes themselves.

Mas Damar

Leads the eight dance classes, from the first basic posture to the full Gambyong Pareanom in costume.

Kendang teacher

Mas Surono

Leads the eight kendang classes, from the first sound symbols to playing the Jaranan with the group.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know.

Can I take both courses?

Yes. The dance class runs from 17.00 to 18.30 and the kendang class starts afterwards, so you can do both on the same evening. Book the two courses separately.

Do I need experience?

Not for block 1 — that is the foundation, designed to start from scratch. Block 2 builds on it.

Can I do only the advanced block?

You can, if you already have the basics. Get in touch and we will look at it together.

What should I bring?

For the dance class we work with a jarik parang klithik and the Gambyong Pareanom costume. When you book we let you know what to bring yourself and what we provide.

What language are the classes taught in?

English. Mas Damar and Mas Surono come from Java, and much of the teaching is by demonstration: you watch and join in. The Javanese names of the movements and the pieces stay as they are.
